Corpse Flower, Little Dougie, Poised To be Orange County College’s Biggest Star

Flower’s are known for two things in particular: enchanting aromas and striking aesthetics. Orange Coast College possesses a flower that is legendary for lacking both of those characteristics, and the fanfare they have built for it is equally intriguing and beguiling. The enigmatic flora in question is the corpse flower, a rare breed world renowned for its repugnant smell, substantial weight, and incredible bloom. Orange Coast College has named the flower Little Dougie, and according to an article on the Orange County Register, thousands are poised to gather to experience his ‘unique’ aroma first hand.

Hailing originally from the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the corpse flower gains its scent from beetles pollinating within. Charmingly enough, the flower gets its name from the fact that it smells like some things dying inside of it. Little Dougie comes in at an impressive five feet and thirty pounds. And while it may seem Dougie’s name is ironic, it’s quite fitting considering his species potential; corpse flowers can weigh up to two hundred pounds. Furthermore, the corpse flower will have its first bloom after roughly a decade of life, with all future blooms happening between 3-5 years until death. That in mind, Little Dougie’s coming of age is quite an event, something the Orange County College knows quite well. Dougie’s senior, Little John, attracted over one thousand visitors to the college for his bloom. With a live stream running at all times and the college bracing for impact, Dougie is poised to surpass his predecessor by a good amount.

The Orange Coast College is far more than Dougie’s living quarters, however. The Campus is an impressive 164 acres, and just a short ways away from Southern California’s famous beaches. The offering of 135 courses of study makes Orange Coast College the premier community college in Southern California and has ranked number one in the area for some time now. With semesters in every season, there is never a wrong time to sign up. If one hopes to get the best education available in Southern California, as well as witness Dougie’s big day, the Orange Coast College is the best option available.
